Frostreaver Alchemy Guide: The Route to 255

The route described here is deliberately practical rather than theoretical. I have not simply selected the recipe with the highest possible trivial level and attempted to make it repeatedly until it stopped producing skill-ups. Instead, I have worked through a series of useful Alchemy recipes as my skill has increased.

The result is therefore a more useful record for another Barbarian Shaman: rather than presenting a supposedly perfect mathematical route, this page records the practical sequence of recipes that has actually been used on Frostreaver.

Start by Training to 21

The first part of the progression is straightforward. Rather than spending money on low-level Alchemy combines, the Alchemy skill should first be raised through guildmaster training to 21.

This gives us a sensible starting point for the practical progression and avoids wasting components on the earliest skill levels.

Once the skill reaches 21, the actual Alchemy progression begins.

The Cheapest Route

There is, however, a much simpler answer if the only objective is to reach 255 Alchemy for the lowest possible cost.

Elixir of Greater Concentration, with a trivial level of 244, is the cheapest combine in the recipe progression. In purely financial terms, the cheapest approach is therefore to make Elixir of Greater Concentration from 21 through 244, and then switch to Potion of Mystical Aptitude for the final step to 255.

That is not the route I chose for Caradawc.

Instead, I decided to work through the other recipes as my Alchemy skill increased. The reason was simple: the alternative recipes produce potions with useful effects rather than spending the entire progression making the same potion simply because it happens to have the lowest combine cost.

This means that the progression recorded below is not intended to be the absolute cheapest possible way of reaching 255. It is the route I actually chose to follow: accepting some additional expenditure in return for producing a variety of potions that have genuine utility to a Shaman.

For someone whose only concern is minimising the amount spent on the skill, Elixir of Greater Concentration from 21 to 244 is the straightforward choice. For someone who would rather have something useful to show for the combines along the way, the progression below provides a more interesting alternative.

The Progression

The following table records the recipes used during Caradawc's practical Alchemy progression. They are listed in order of their trivial levels.

Kilva's Blistering Flesh 52 Clubmoss + Jatamasi Grants Scorching Skin, a damage shield effect. 9pp 4gp 4sp 8cp
Turtle's Drink 63 Clubmoss + Sumbul Grants Turtle Skin, providing defensive protection. 9pp 4gp 9sp 8cp
Potion of Spirit Shield 110 Clover + Clubmoss + Sumbul Grants Shifting Shield, providing a protective defensive effect. 9pp 9gp 7sp 2cp
Kilva's Skin of Flame 136 Clover + Clubmoss + Jatamasi Grants Kilva's Skin of Flame, a stronger damage-shield effect. 9pp 9gp 7sp 2cp
Adrenaline Tap 170 Comfrey + Dhea Increases attack speed by 50%. 10gp 4sp 8cp
Mystical Infusion 202 Sickle Leaf ×2 Provides +50 mana to the mana pool for approximately 20 minutes. 10gp 4sp 8cp
Elixir of Concentration 212 Violet Tri-Tube Sap + Yerbhimba Provides +2 mana regeneration per tick for approximately 20 minutes. 7gp 8sp 6cp
