Classic EverQuest Shaman Equipment Guide
Introduction
Equipment progression in Classic EverQuest differs significantly from that of modern MMORPGs. Rather than replacing one complete armour set with another, Shamans gradually improve their equipment one piece at a time through quests, dungeon exploration and raiding. A level 50 Shaman may still be wearing several pieces acquired twenty levels earlier simply because no better replacement has yet been found.
This guide introduces the major equipment milestones available during the original release of EverQuest. It is intended as an overview rather than a comprehensive item database and highlights the armour sets and iconic equipment that defined the Classic era.
Starting Out
During the early levels there is no dedicated class armour available to Shamans. Most players will wear whatever equipment they can acquire from merchants, quests, crafted armour and dungeon drops.
Common early equipment includes:
Raw-hide Armour
Leather Armour
Patchwork Armour
Banded Armour
Bronze Armour (where strength allows)
Miscellaneous Wisdom jewellery
The exact combination is far less important than maintaining a reasonable Armour Class while gradually increasing Wisdom and Mana.
Totemic Armour
For many Shamans, Totemic Armour represents the first major class-specific equipment set.
Unlike later quest armour, obtaining Totemic Armour requires travelling throughout Norrath collecting unusual quest items from outdoor zones, dungeons and named creatures. Completing the full set is a significant undertaking and introduces players to many parts of the world that they might otherwise never visit.
Highlights
Original Shaman class armour.
Seven-piece quest set.
Multi-zone quest line.
Excellent mid-game equipment.
Memorable class quest with unique appearance.
Although many pieces will eventually be replaced by planar raid equipment, Totemic Armour remains one of the defining achievements for a Classic-era Shaman.

The Plane of Hate
Once players begin raiding, the Plane of Hate becomes the primary source of class-specific raid armour.
For Shamans this is the Rune Etched Armour set, the premier raid armour available during Classic EverQuest.
Notable equipment includes:
Rune Etched Helm
Rune Etched Breastplate
Rune Etched Sleeves
Rune Etched Bracer
Rune Etched Gloves
Rune Etched Leggings
Rune Etched Boots
Spitestone Shield
Rune Etched Armour represents the pinnacle of Classic class armour and was designed as the natural progression beyond Totemic Armour.

The Plane of Fear
While the Plane of Fear does not provide a complete Shaman armour set, it contains one of the most iconic Barbarian Shaman weapons in the game.
Barbarian Spiritist's Hammer
Restricted to Barbarian Shamans, the Barbarian Spiritist's Hammer became one of the defining weapons of the Classic era. Its excellent Wisdom bonus and powerful proc ensured that it remained desirable long after it was first introduced.
For many Barbarian Shamans it represented the first truly prestigious class weapon.

The Plane of Sky
Unlike the Planes of Hate and Fear, the Plane of Sky rewards players with a collection of powerful individual items rather than a complete armour set.
Several of these items remained highly desirable throughout the Classic era and beyond.
Notable equipment includes:
Child's Tear
Pegasus Feather Cloak
Cloak of Spiroc Feathers
These items were frequently worn alongside Rune Etched Armour and other raid equipment, demonstrating that EverQuest progression was rarely about wearing a single complete set.

Equipment Progression in Classic EverQuest
Unlike later expansions, Classic EverQuest offers no fixed equipment path.
A typical Shaman might progress through equipment something like this:
Early crafted and dungeon equipment
Totemic Armour
Rune Etched Armour
Individual upgrades from the Plane of Fear
Individual upgrades from the Plane of Sky
However, every character's journey is different. Equipment is acquired one piece at a time, and most players finish the Classic era wearing a mixture of Totemic, Rune Etched and planar accessories rather than a single matching armour set.
Looking Ahead
The release of Kunark fundamentally changed Shaman equipment progression. New dungeons, dragons, epic weapons and powerful accessories offered many alternatives to the original planar equipment, while the introduction of Velious later replaced the original class armour model with an entirely new faction-based quest system.
Subsequent guides in this series will explore Shaman equipment during the Kunark and Velious expansions in greater detail.
