Gwalchmai's Journey: Chapter One - Leaving Surefall
A Frostreaver Guide to the Surefall Druid – Chapter One: Leaving Surefall (Levels 1–4)
Inspired by Paul Lynch's classic Surefall Druid Guide and updated for the EverQuest Frostreaver Time-Locked Progression Server.
Frostreaver Note: This guide follows the spirit of Paul Lynch's original work while adapting it for the current Frostreaver server. Spell levels have changed over the years, some quests have been introduced in later expansions, and several Luclin-era quest lines, including the Pine Druid Armor and Qeynos Badge of Honour, are not yet available. Those quests will be covered separately in a future companion guide.
Introduction
There are few starting locations in EverQuest as atmospheric as Surefall Glade. Hidden away behind the rolling hills west of Qeynos, it serves as the home of the Jaggedpine Treefolk, a peaceful community of druids and rangers devoted to preserving the balance of nature. It is here that Gawlchmai begins his journey.
When I first created this character my intention was simply to replay Paul Lynch's famous Surefall Druid Guide. It remains one of the finest class guides ever written, not because it teaches the fastest route through EverQuest, but because it encourages players to experience the world as a young druid rather than rushing towards the endgame.
Over the years, however, EverQuest has evolved. Spell levels have shifted, Time-Locked Progression servers have introduced their own quirks, and some quest lines now belong to later expansions. Rather than replace Paul's work, this guide attempts to build upon it, updating the information for Frostreaver while remaining faithful to the spirit of the original adventure.
The First Morning in Surefall
Before venturing beyond the safety of the Glade, spend a little time becoming familiar with your surroundings. Surefall is a surprisingly compact village, yet almost every resident will become important as your journey progresses. Although it is tempting to rush straight towards Qeynos, a few minutes spent learning the layout of the village will save a great deal of running later.
Your first priority should be purchasing your initial spells. Modern EverQuest differs from the version described in Paul's original guide, most notably because Snare is now available from level one.
Never underestimate this spell.
Snare is not simply a means of slowing enemies. It prevents fleeing creatures from bringing additional monsters, makes solo combat dramatically safer and remains one of the defining druid abilities throughout the game. It should occupy a permanent place on your spell bar from the moment you leave Surefall until the day you reach level sixty.
As funds allow, I recommend purchasing:
- Minor Healing
- Skin Like Wood
- Snare
- Flame Lick
- Sense Animals
- Endure Fire
The remaining level one spells can be purchased later as money becomes available.
Your First Journey
Rather than wandering aimlessly into Qeynos Hills, your first expedition should have a purpose. Two simple quests combine naturally and introduce every important location that a young druid will need during the opening hours of the game.
Going Postal
The first begins with Sivana Lutewhisper, who may be found at:
/waypoint 139.75, 171.19, 4.38
Sivana entrusts you with a delivery to South Qeynos. It is hardly the stuff of epic legends, yet it quietly teaches one of the most important lessons in classic EverQuest — learning the roads. By following the route from Surefall through Qeynos Hills and into the city you become familiar with a journey that will soon feel like second nature.
Quest: Going Postal
Quest Giver: Sivana Lutewhisper
Waypoint:
/waypoint 139.75, 171.19, 4.38Destination: Larsk Juton, Surefall's representative in South Qeynos.
Nesiff's Statue
Before leaving the Glade, speak with Vesteri Nomanoi and begin the quest commonly known as Nesiff's Statue. Like the postal delivery, it requires no combat and fits perfectly into the same journey through Qeynos.
Although the rewards are modest, the quest introduces several important NPCs and encourages exploration of the city. There is very little additional effort involved in completing it alongside Going Postal, making it one of the highest-value beginner quests available.
Quest: Nesiff's Statue
Quest Giver: Vesteri Nomanoi
Destination: Nesiff Tallaherd, South Qeynos
Return Item: Wooden Statue
Exploring Qeynos
Once inside the city, resist the temptation to rush straight back to Surefall. Spend a little time exploring.
Locate the bank. Find the Temple of Life. Visit the Warrior Guild, where Captain Tillin will later accept the Gnoll Fangs collected from Blackburrow. Walk through the merchants' quarter and familiarise yourself with the layout of the city. Before long these streets will become some of the most frequently travelled in Antonica.
The Lion's Mane Inn is also worth remembering. Although it serves little purpose during these opening levels, it becomes an important location later in the story.
Learning the Hills
With your first errands completed, it is time to begin learning the craft of a druid.
Remain close to Surefall and Qeynos Hills during the next few levels. Wolves, snakes, skeletons, bears and spiderlings provide steady experience while allowing you to experiment with your growing spellbook.
Although this guide does not recommend pursuing the traditional Bear Hide or Wolf Hide armour quests, simply because Gawlchmai has inherited equipment from his elder kinsman Caradawc, it is still worth collecting useful trade items as you adventure.
Spiderling Silk, Bone Chips and animal pelts all have future uses and are rarely wasted.
Most importantly, begin practising the combination of Snare and Grasping Roots. Learning to control a fight rather than simply trading blows is one of the defining skills of an accomplished druid.
Preparing for Blackburrow
By the time you approach level four you should have completed your initial journeys, become familiar with the roads linking Surefall and Qeynos and assembled a modest collection of spells.
The next stage of Gawlchmai's journey will take him into Blackburrow, where the campaign against the Sabertooth Gnolls truly begins. From that point onwards, Gnoll Fangs and Moonstones become the cornerstone of efficient early levelling, while Blackburrow itself becomes a second home for every young druid of Surefall.

This guide owes a considerable debt to Paul Lynch, whose original Surefall Druid Guide introduced countless players to one of EverQuest's most memorable starting experiences. The aim of this series is not to replace that work, but to update it for the Frostreaver Time-Locked Progression server while preserving the sense of discovery that made the original so enduring.
